Facebook says goodbye to overcrowded News Feeds

As many people tend to skip over commercials, they cannot help but to be bombarded with ads, “posts from brands and publishers in favor of posts from friend and family.”

Facebook set out to recreate the opportunity to allow their users to do just that.

"We've gotten feedback from our community that public content—posts from businesses, brands and media—is crowding out the personal moments that lead us to connect more with each other," CEO of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg.

I think this is very true. I, as a user, have noticed my news feed content to be less post from my friends and family, and more from heartwarming videos about dogs being rescued, or the child who got to see his mother for the first time after undergoing surgery.

While all of the ads may be bringing in more business, it has become all about the business, and much less about sharing or connecting with those we care about the most.

There are so many ads, videos, and quizzes, that it takes away from the original idea that Facebook had set out to do: connect people together.

Facebook has been criticized over the advertising their social media outlet contains. “Time spent on Facebook declined in August and September, down 7 percent and 4.7 percent, respectively, compared to the year prior,” Wieser said in an investment note to clients.

With the constant “fake news” that is circulated online, and the divisiveness and negativity our political climate can bring, I think this will be good for Facebook, and, more importantly, good for its users.
